On foot, it's a long way to the beach at Gearhart.
The path starts out gravel and changes to sand. It winds up and down mini hills, sometimes semi steep, with your feet sinking in and your shoes filling.
On and on, and though at the beginning of the trail you can see the Pacific Ocean gleaming on the horizon, the closer you get the less of your final destination you can see ... Until you can't see it at all.
But still you walk in because if you keep heading west you must hit beach eventually ... Right?
Maybe it's time to turn around and go back. You're out of shape, and your calves hurt. Anyways, your nephew is griping about having to carry his toys.
The sand is too deep. The wind is too strong. The walk is too boring. Your hair and the sun are both in your eyes.
Is it worth it?
Then you crest the final little rise, and there is it. The ocean.
Yes. Yes, it was worth it.
I haven't reached the ocean yet. Neither have you. But I have faith I will dive into all my oceans in time. We both will!
I'm still walking from Gearhart to the beach. Still struggling in the sand and the wind and my own stupid hair (which I should really get less stubborn about and put up in a ponytail). But I'm getting there. One dragged foot at a time.
