This is another example that food sensitivities, and choosing low carb, paleo, keto, AIP, or any other way of eating doesn’t have to feel exclusionary. The fam had a fajita night a couple of weeks back, at the step-teens request. They made their wraps with tortillas, added the chicken, salsa, and of course lots of fresh local Québécois cheese (which, unfortunately, I’m allergic to!) I don’t eat grains or dairy, and at this point, limited vegetables. So I just had to take what I could have...I placed the chicken with it’s sauce in a bowl with some delicious salsa, and I had a feast (I know salsa isn’t aip friendly, it was a successful reintroduce for me). I didn’t feel deprived at all. It could have been easy for me to wallow, or complain that I couldn’t have the wraps and the cheese that they had, but instead, I enjoyed the delicious flavours in my bowl, which for me, was quite the treat, because for the past year I haven’t used much more than sea salt or smoked salt in my dishes! I enjoyed every bite. I ate until I felt satisfied. I didn’t need wraps and cheese to satisfy me.
The point is, if you’re struggling to make dietary changes for whatever reason, it’s much more effective to focus on what you CAN have, rather than what you’re trying to avoid. If you’re finding that you’re hung up on a certain food and can’t seem to find joy in your food without it, it might be time to investigate why that is.
Sometimes a food intolerance can affect neurochemicals causing you to crave it. Sometimes the food itself contain compounds that activate brain receptors making you miss it when you don’t have it. Sometimes it’s an emotional association. This often can happen when we eat to manage stress or strong emotions. Sometimes it’s habit. . 👉 what do you think? Have you ever struggled with this? What do you think about this perception shift? I would love to know your thoughts!
